Have you heard about lab grown diamonds? Precious stones created in a controlled laboratory setting do not seem real. But the affordability, ethics, purity and beauty associated with lab grown diamonds are hard to ignore.

A Lab Grown Diamond is a relatively new object. It’s not a surprise that consumers have questions about these grown diamonds. Are lab diamonds real diamonds or fake stones? Do lab diamonds look as attractive as mined diamonds? Here we give you the answers to some frequently asked diamond questions, so you can make an informed decision when you are buying a gemstone.

Are Lab Diamonds Real or Fake?

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. There’s confusion around this issue, with some people claiming that diamonds are only real if they are mined, but lab diamonds are not synthetic diamonds or fake diamonds. They are different from cubic zirconia and stones made from glass. There is nothing wrong with buying a diamond simulant, but you wouldn’t purchase a cubic zirconia stone thinking it was real. Diamonds created in a laboratory have the same properties as mined diamonds and are therefore not classed as fake or synthetic.

Why Are Lab Diamonds Real?

You may still be confused as to how a diamond grown in a lab can be as “real” as a diamond that was created in the earth over millions of years. It’s all about the chemical structure. All diamonds, mined and grown, are formed from carbon. The process of bonding carbon atoms under intense heat can either be completed naturally, as in the earth’s core, or mimicked. Diamonds from a mine and from a lab are officially the same since they have the same chemical composition.

Are Lab Grown Coloured Diamonds Real, Too?

Many people are interested in this question since buying a mined coloured diamond is prohibitively expensive. And the answer is yes. Earth processes create coloured diamonds from carbon and trace minerals that give the diamond its colour. For example, nitrogen creates yellow diamonds, gamma radiation produces green diamonds, and boron makes a blue diamond. Coloured diamonds are created in the lab through the addition of these minerals and elements to the process.

Why Are Lab Diamonds Cheaper?

And are they lower quality because they are cheaper? It is much less costly to produce a lab diamond than to mine one from the earth. Mining is a labour and machinery intensive process. Mining involves extensive operations in hard-to-reach places. It is much more cost-effective to grow diamonds in a controlled laboratory setting. Plus, there is no high mark-up associated with these diamonds.

Are Lab Diamonds Sustainable?

Grown diamonds are traceable and conflict-free. Mined diamonds may be conflict-free but there is no way to be certain. You can check a diamond under the Kimberley Process, but this procedure has many drawbacks. Lab stones are guaranteed conflict-free and traceable. These gems are also eco-friendly and produced with a lower carbon footprint and better sustainability practices.
