Everyone wants to look and feel young and beautiful. However, sun damages, aging, acne, and other skin problems may make this desire an unachievable dream for people of all ages. The good news is that serum has saved the day for many of its users and is now one of the top-of-the-line cosmetic products for individuals and celebrities alike. What catches many people’s attention is the price of these products. We decided to conduct research to determine if the product is worth the hype and cost and benefits.

What’s Serum, and what’s Its Difference between Lotions and Creams?

Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, a certified dermatologist, refers to serum as a gel or liquid containing highly concentrated skin actives that can easily penetrate more in-depth than most tropical contents (like a moisturizer) which prevent penetration.

Dr. Nussbaum advises users to treat serum as a top priority skincare routine for every individual who wants to have glowing, even-tone, firmer, and smoother skin. Most people use the serum as an excellent anti-aging product. However, Dr. Nussbaum maintains that anyone, regardless of age, can use the products since it offers more targeted results than other cosmetic products.

Kristofer Buckle (a celebrity makeup artist) uses serum regularly to result in a firmer, smoother texture and make pores appear smaller, increasing moisture levels.

Shopping For Serum Products

Howard Murad, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Murad, Inc., advises that users check out the product’s ingredients before purchasing. This will ensure that the product addresses their skin concerns and contains essential elements for healthy skin. A fair skin restore serum should contain crucial ingredients such as retinol, linoleic acid, niacinamide, adenosine, ceramides, and various peptides. The components can be broken into:

  • The antioxidants, such as pomegranate extract, grape seed, and vitamin C. They offer active protection against sun damage and fight the destructive free radicals responsible for what many people refer to as skin aging, including fine lines.
  • Hydrators, including amino acids, ceramides, hyaluronic acids, and essential fatty acids. They help strengthen the skin’s barrier and help build robust cell membranes. These elements replace natural skin fats, increase moisture retention, and safeguard skin from the harsh environment features. As a result, they guard the skin from dryness and fine lines.
  • Anti-inflammatories like zinc, aloe vera, arnica, and goldenseal help neutralize redness and prevent inflammatory cell damage.

How to Use Serum

Dermatologists believe that most basic serums comprise a blend of antioxidants, which will automatically brighten every users’ skin. However, users hoping to address specific skin concerns should check that the product contains the ingredient essential for their needs.

Dr. Nussbaum advises that users should apply serum twice daily to the neck and face immediately after cleansing the skin. Since the serum is lightweight, she adds that anyone using other skin foundations and makeup can apply it beneath any SPF.

However, Dr. Carlos A. Charles, founder and medical director of Derma di Colore in Chelsea, advises against an evening serum routine to individuals already using a topical retinoid. According to him, a combination of the two may cause irritation.

Is Serum an Ultimate Solution To Everyone?

The products are not conducive for individuals suffering from eczema and rosacea. According to Dr. Charles, the high concentration of its ingredients and its gel-like consistency can cause irritation on such skin.

Additionally, he adds that mature individuals mostly have drier skin. As a result, serums may not provide their moisture requirements. He, therefore, advises such individuals to use moisturizers and creams alongside serums.

Conclusion

Serum may be costly, but the advantages and benefits are worth the value. Due to its high concentration, users don’t have to apply massive amounts since a little of it can go a long way and consequently save on the need to frequently shop for the product.
