Everyone has their favorite seasons and a season they hate. The same things can be said for handguns as well. It becomes very hard for gun owners to maintain their guns’ top condition during the winter season.

Now that the polar vortex is on the way, everyone will be storing their gun in a safe and dry place. By the way, the polar vortex is the new name for winter. However, before putting your guns away safely, ensure that they are properly cleaned and dried.

Tips For Properly Maintaining Your Gun During Winters

As a licensed firearm holder, you must be feeling anxious this winter. Winter is the sworn enemy of guns. One mistake, and you will find that winter has damaged the gun from inside out. To ensure that you follow the right techniques to keep your gun safe this winter.

We the People Holsters review the best gun maintaining techniques to keep your gun safe from the winters,

1. Remove Foam Casing

Before you store your firearm in the storeroom, ensure that there is no inner foam lining. If you leave even a little bit of foam in the gun, corrosion is bound to happen. The problem is not the foam, but its nature to attract moisture and store them. Consequently, the stored moisture will convert into the water and will trigger the process of corrosion.

Instead of foam, you can use other alternatives like gun sacks or storage backs. They will greatly reduce the chances of corrosion. As long as your gun has anti-rusting properties, you can rest assured of the gun’s health.

2. Clean The Bore

At the onset of the winter, it is necessary that you clean every part of your gun. The residue solvent might cause additional damage while it is being stored. You can also analyze your firearm to see if there are any wear and tear on the firearm’s surface. You can even use masking take to cover up the part you think needs to be covered.

Once you have examined the firearms, lubricate the part of the guns to remain in top condition even after months.

3. Use Surface Protectant

For firearms that are made up of metals, corrosion is just second nature. However, you can take the necessary measures to stop the corrosion with a surface protectant’s help.

While you are applying surface protectant, ensure that your skin is not in contact with the gun surface. It will be advisable that you wear latex gloves. This practice helps to offer two-way protection to your guns. One is applying surface protectant, and the other is by wearing gloves, you are eliminating any risk of physical or chemical abrasiveness.

4. Maintain The Room Temperature

Regulating room temperature can be a good practice to keep all your guns safe from cold weather. You can start with sealing any external openings (Windows, doors, and any leaks) to stop cold air from entering from outside.

If you are not careful enough, low room temperatures can also lead to corrosion. However, if you have your room at a regulated temperature, you can keep your gun rust free.

5. Remove All Residue

Once you have used your firearms, you must disassemble the guns to clean them. Any residue left in any part of the gun can result in damaging the part of the firearms. Disassembling practice helps your gun to remove ant fingerprints and residue, thereby boosting its longevity.

Any residue attracts moisture. If not cleaned properly, rust starts to make grooves. Don’t forget the wood part of the firearms. Give the woods high-quality wax treatments. The wood surface tends to swell up after absorbing moisture. Applying wax creates a protective layer and keeps the moisture away.
