If you’ve been wanting to purchase a used piano to bring into your home but are nervous about investing this amount of space and money into an instrument that has been loved by a previous owner, there are a few things you should know that will help to ensure that you find a piano that will look and sound great.

To help you in making this choice, here are three things to keep in mind when buying a used piano.

Check It Out Before Buying

For most people who make secondhand purchases today, a lot of the shopping is done online. While this can be great for some purchases, if you’re going to be buying something like a piano, you’ll want to be sure that it’s actually a quality instrument before you give the seller any money.

When you go to see the piano before making the final decision to purchase it, you’ll want to check every part of the piano to make sure that it’s been well cared for and maintained to the level that you’re comfortable with. Take a look at things like the keys, pedals, and hammers. You should also examine the soundboard, pin block, and the strings. If you don’t know exactly what you should be looking for to determine if the piano is a good buy, bring someone along with you that has more experience with pianos.

Bring The Right Tools For Examination

To ensure that you’re able to do a proper examination of the piano before you choose to buy it, you’ll want to be sure that you bring the right tools with you when you first go to check out the instrument.

Some of the tools that you’ll want to keep handy when checking out any used piano include things like a flashlight, a soft paint brush for removing dust, a large and a small screwdriver, a tuning fork or pitch pipe, and someone with a good ear to play the piano and help ensure that you’ll be able to use the piano as you intend. Without these tools, it will be hard for you to know the real state of the piano.

Get As Much Information As Possible

Along with doing your own inspection of the piano before you choose to buy it and take it home, you’ll also want to ask the previous owner as much as you can about the history of the piano.

If the previous owner is there while you’re checking out the piano, ask about things like when the piano was made, if it’s been tuned or played often, if it’s been moved before, and if they’ve had any issues with it in the past. The answers to these questions can help you to know if you’re getting a quality instrument or not.

If you’re wanting to buy a used piano, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you find the right one for the price.
