How to create the Cottagecore look

April 27, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

Cottagecore is an aesthetic which is very much on trend at the moment. It helps to bring cosiness to your home by adding character, but in a sustainable way. It gives a very natural and traditional finish to your home without being outdated as it is a way to bring organic elements indoors, whether that’s from indoor plants or dried flowers. This trend has shifted away from the prints and florals which were once sought after in favour of a more simplistic look.

Introduce nature to your home

Adding plants and flowers to your home is the easy way to bring nature indoors however, it goes much further than that. By using natural materials like stone and wood helps to make your home well connected to the great outdoors. By adding warm, organic textures to your home with a natural wood flooring will brighten up your living space. Solid wood flooring can be very expensive so by SPC flooring, it is a great alternative to get the same effect. As it’s 100% waterproof, it is ideal for families and pets. From Herringbone to regular style flooring, there is a style for everyone.

Log fire

Whether you opt for an open fire or a wood burner, it helps to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere which is idyllic throughout the colder months. The natural sounds of crackling wood burning away brings comfort to a home. It helps to bring the family and guests together making it the heart of the home.

Furnishings

A lot of vintage and reclaimed furniture is made from natural resources which is perfect to to get that Cottagecore feeling. By incorporating preloved furniture to your already existing furniture will still give your home a contemporary feel and style. It is a great way to redesign your home whether that is on a budget or not. Think about uplifting your current furniture. To incorporate the more natural and subtle tones, you could reupholster your chairs or sofas which is what Cottagecore is centred around; returning to traditional skills and incorporating them into your lifestyle.

Decorating your home

This is by far the easiest way to adjust the aesthetic of your home. Maybe you could learn to sew to make cushion covers or have a go at making pottery to create simple decorative pieces. Painting your walls a colour which is earthy and natural will help bring simplicity to your home whilst being an inexpensive way to change your indoor environment and atmosphere. Think about simplicity. Maybe declutter your home to add space to your living area which will add serenity and become a relaxed place to unwind. Think about the materials, opt for décor pieces which use organic materials as this will help to bring in the natural beauty of the outdoors.

The aim of the Cottagecore trend is to celebrate traditional skills. You want your home to feel inviting so by using muted tones combined with layers of texture will help to add depth. Whether you live in the rural country side or a flat in the middle of a city, there are many ways you can create a rural, pastoral vibe.

Plumbing Signs to Watch When Having A Cast Iron Pipe Plumbing

April 27, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

The age and era for cast iron plumbing should be long gone. Ideally, these systems we used centuries back and may not be efficient today. The chances are high that a homeowner still having these pipes will face a few challenges here and there. Common of the problems with them is that they are prone to damages due to extreme weather changes, water quality, and age.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to note that it is always easy to know if one may need a cast iron pipe repair. That is especially true since the pipes are hidden behind walls and in the basements. But in most cases, some universal signs will tell when someone should do a cast iron repair or consider a replacement. The signs include but are not limited to the following.

Discoloration

When a homeowner discovers some brown or yellow water coming from the taps, the piping systems may be faulty. This will come due to the corrosion or rusting on the cast iron pipes. Discolored water, especially when that is not a common issue in a given area, means the pipes are vulnerable and should be checked.

Leaks

Frequent leaks are another sign homeowners should pay attention to. These issues may arise more often due to cracks in the pipes. Some leaks can be persistent and may pose risks to the property, such as flooding. Therefore, if leaks continue despite minor repairs, a replacement is typically the next step. And while addressing plumbing issues, it’s also essential to know how to shave without clogging the drain to prevent future problems.

Odor

It can be so uncomfortable to live in a house with an unpleasant smell. Such odor will come when cracked pipes allow sewer gas to escape. A normal sewer system should be airtight, but there can be a few exemptions once in a while. When the case persists, it may mean the owner needs some serious cast iron pipe repairs or even replacement.

Mold

Mold is another evident sign of complication with the piping system. A cracked pipe that leaks water will lead to mold infestation. The costs of dealing with mold due to the magnitude of damage they cause can be unbearable. As such, whenever you notice even the slight of mold development on the wall or anywhere else, seeking expert advice will be a wise move.

Cracks

Cracks are common to occur at any point in the house. But when one notices them on the foundation or along the walls, it shows the pipes are damaged. Usually, this may happen when the mainline had a leak but went undetected. When left unreplaced, the damage will bring some sinkholes.

Healthy Lawn

Funny but true. While sewage may be unhealthy for human beings, they are good for vegetation. When someone notices a strangely healthy lawn developing around the home without doing anything, it could mean the sewage is leaking. And in most cases, this may indicate a deep-rooted problem in the whole plumbing system.

8 Ways to Create the Perfect Garden in Your Backyard

April 21, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

Source: https://www.pexels.com/photo/gray-concrete-pathway-besides-pink-flower-during-day-158028/

Being surrounded by greenery can help to improve mental health. If you’ve got a good amount of space in your backyard, you can use it to create the perfect garden for yourself and your family. Here are 8 ways you can create the perfect garden in your backyard.

Know your location well

You can’t hope to create a perfect garden without having any knowledge of your geographical location. You need to be able to differentiate between plants that will survive in your geographical location and those that won’t. Having an understanding of the temperature, rainfall, humidity, and other such details of your location will help you. You can decide which plants to grow and which ones you shouldn’t be wasting any money/time on. You should also look at the big picture of what you want your backyard garden to look like. You will be able to achieve the perfect garden only when you have an idea of what it looks like.

Decide what you want to grow

This decision will be guided by your understanding of the geographical location. Do you want to create a garden to grow vegetables and fruits? Are you looking to create a herb garden or a flower garden? Do you want to grow a combination of plants in your garden? Whatever you decide to grow, you can only do it after having a thorough understanding of your location. You can even decide on plants with a variety of colours if you want to give your garden a colourful appearance.

You should also decide on the location of the plants you do decide to grow. Will they have enough exposure to sunlight? Will they be protected from the wind? Decide accordingly.

Get your hands on gardening tools

You won’t have the perfect garden without using the right gardening tools. If you’re looking for ways to create the perfect garden in your backyard, you need to get your hands on effective gardening tools. This goes beyond just a pair of gloves and a shovel. You will also need:

· A potting soil scoop so that you can fill pots easily

· A kitchen knife for when you want to make cuts

· A rechargeable cordless drill

· Pruning saw so that you have easy accessibility to tight spaces

· Hand pruners so that stems and branches can be cut

· A hori hori knife to divide root clumps and to use for other coarse garden tasks

Test and build your soil

Whether your soil is acidic, alkaline, or neutral is an important consideration before you start gardening. Typically, a neutral pH value of 7 is ideal for most plants. You also need to check if your backyard has sand, silt, clay, rocks, or a mixture of these 4 to grow your plants. You also need to check whether there has been any lead or arsenic contamination in your backyard soil. You can typically order lab tests to find out such results or contact your local authorities for further details about the area. Any contamination would require you to reconsider growing edible plants. Once you test your soil and are satisfied with the results, you need to build your soil.

Create your garden bed

Plan the size and type of your garden bed. Rectangular or square beds can be used. You can even get creative and make beds of different shapes and sizes. Raised garden beds will help your garden look more attractive and also make it easier for you to work in your garden.

Choose and plant the right seeds or transplants

You may want to grow plants from the stage of seeds, but this is time-consuming and can give rise to several obstacles. If you think that transplanting seedlings is a better idea, do that. Planting your seeds or seedlings the right way is important for the perfect garden. Make sure you don’t cover the stem by mistake, as this could be detrimental to the plant.

Water your garden and make liberal use of mulch

Your plants need to get sufficient water to grow. You need to make sure the soil is moist but not soggy; otherwise, it could lead to rotting of the roots. The mulch used must also be matched to the needs of the plant.

Maintain your garden properly

Proper garden maintenance in Melbourne will keep weeds away and ensure that your garden thrives. You can even make use of professional lawn mowing and gardening services in Melbourne to keep your garden looking fresh and healthy.

While you’re at it, you could also benefit from house cleaning services.

Plumbing Mistakes You Should Avoid in Your Home

March 23, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

With a homeownership rate of 52.5%, most Charlotte, NC residents own homes. Having a home comes with responsibilities and ensuring the plumbing system is functioning properly. Today, many Charlotte homeowners prefer fixing plumbing problems as a DIY task. They purchase all the necessary tools and kits and take up the matter into their own hands to ensure a smooth plumbing system.

While it may seem easy, DIY projects often come with hazardous situations. From unsafe tools to electric shocks, plumbing mistakes can occur when you are least prepared. Therefore, hire a trained and licensed plumber in Charlotte, NC, to maintain your plumbing system regularly.

However, you can experience a plumbing emergency that requires an immediate response while waiting for a professional plumber to fix it permanently. You need to know the top plumbing mistakes you should avoid controlling impending disasters in your home in such circumstances. Below are the prime plumbing mistakes you need to avoid:

Extreme Tightening of Fixtures

One common blunder that you can make is to over-tighten the plumbing fixtures in your home. For instance, supply tubes, fittings, bolts, among other fixtures, do not need extreme tightening. Thus, avoid fixing tightly because the fitting might crack and cause further damage.

Although you may not see the cracking immediately, excessive tightening may cause the fixture to break down, resulting in severe flooding. Avoid tightening the faucets because you will be applying excess pressure when using the tap, which causes wear and tear. Eventually, you may start experiencing water leakages and faulty fixtures.

Therefore, avoid the blunder of over-tightening toilet bolts and other plumbing components because you might require emergency services.

Using Wrong Tapes

Professional plumbers understand the proper use of the Teflon tape in their work. The skilled plumbers usually wrap the tape clockwise to ensure it works efficiently. However, most individuals who prefer DIY jobs often misuse the tape by wrapping it backwards. Thus, the tape does not hold a fixture properly since it will come off over time.

Research extensively and identify the different Teflon tapes and their uses. Avoid using inappropriate tape for the wrong fixture if you want to achieve excellent plumbing results.

Using Commercial Drain Cleaners

Clogged drains are common plumbing challenges affecting many homes. Pouring commercially-bought drain cleaners in their drains is the first mistake homeowners make. These cleaners contain harsh chemicals that usually gradually damage the plumbing pipes. They only dissolve paper and hair while leaving the other foreign debris.

Unclogging kitchen sinks or bathroom drains require barbed tools to clean out the drainage system. Therefore, do not use the drain cleaners as the first option until you use the tools first, or else you might be dealing with excessive leakages in the future.

Forgetting to Turn Off Water

When you experience a plumbing emergency, you might panic and decide to change the valve without turning off the main water supply. If you opt to continue repairing a leaking sink or valve, you might cause further damage to your home due to flooding.

Therefore, turn off the main water supply before fixing the valve or any other broken fixture. Avoid further damages by following the advice of skilled plumbers and save extra cash you would have spent to repair the losses.

Using Incomplete Spare Parts

Most homeowners who prefer DIY jobs often make the mistake of buying incomplete spare parts. For instance, if the washer needs repair, you need to replace various parts of the sink, such as the gasket and O-rings. If you replace one part, you will still encounter water leakages over time.

You will make numerous trips to the hardware to buy spare parts without achieving satisfactory results. Therefore, replace the entire fixture to avoid wasting time, effort, and money purchasing one spare part each time you encounter faulty components.

Ignoring Local Codes

Professional plumbers understand the importance of plumbing codes of a particular location. For instance, a skilled plumber in Charlotte, NC, should be familiar with all the local codes in the area. But most homeowners practicing DIY plumbing tasks are not aware of such rules.

Therefore, before undertaking any major project, visit the authority offices to know more about the regulations and avoid harsh penalties in case of any problems. Certain projects may require plumbing permits to execute, depending on the city or state. Thus, you follow up on the plumbing codes in your region.

While tackling plumbing problems as DIY projects may seem like a good idea at first glance, it’s crucial to avoid common mistakes that could worsen the damage. Instead, hiring a qualified plumber for regular maintenance is a smarter choice to extend the lifespan of your plumbing system. And while you’re maintaining your home, don’t forget to learn how to shave without clogging the drain to prevent future plumbing issues!

And its glossy green leaves remain an attractive alternative while waiting for the blooming season to come.

Flowering Maple

Growers best recommend flowering maples because of its being fast-growing flowering plants. It is also constantly blooming, so you won’t have to worry about its flowers shedding off. While its leaves may look like those of the maple tree, a flowering maple isn’t part of the maple family.

It has crepe paper-like flowers in several shades of either red, yellow, orange, or pink. You may grow a flowering maple upright as a tree and regularly prune it to keep the plant shrubby. Or you may place it in a hanging basket. It can grow either way as long as it is put under bright light and in moist soil.

Calamondin Orange

In growing calamondin orange, not only will you have a flower, but fruit too! This citrusy hybrid between kumquat bears and mandarin oranges produces fruity white flowers during late winter or spring.

You may place peace lilies in areas with minimal light but make sure to keep its soil evenly moist.

Ixora

Ixora, others may call it a ‘flame of woods,’ has clustered flowers in different red, orange, and yellow shades. When matured, its leathery, bronze foliage develops into a glossier shade of green. In case the stems turn too leggy, you may prune the plant to keep it compact still. To ensure attractive blooming, you may place it under bright light and in moderately dry soil.

Angel-Wing Begonia

Angel-wing begonias can grow up to six feet tall. It has attractive wing-shaped leaves that can be a perfect alternative when it isn’t time for the flowers to bloom. During the blooming season, Angel-wing begonia’s flowers grow into shades of white, pink, red blossoms.

To keep this plant bushy, you may pinch the tall stems back so it can only grow around two to three feet tall. It is best to place angel-wing begonias under moderate to bright light. Remember to always keep the soil evenly moist when watering.

Crown of Thorns

Crown of thorns has delicately branched, thick, spiny, brown stems that are attractive to grow outdoors. Its colorful flowers can last your garden for several weeks. When taking care of the crown of thorns, it is best to put them under bright or intense light. Be sure to keep its soil moderately dry in between watering.

Takeaway

Adding colors and fragrance to your backyard and home isn’t as hard as you imagined it to be. As long as you know the needs of the plants you are taking care of, you should have nothing to worry about. You may check this list from time to time to give you an idea for your next gardening project.

3 Things To Do After Moving Into A New Home

January 20, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

While the process of moving into a new home can be a huge ordeal, there are a few things that you’ll want to be sure that you do when in your new home before you get too settled. Accomplishing these things will make your life at home much easier and more comfortable, so make sure you don’t put them off for too long.

To show you exactly what these tasks are, here are three things to do after moving into a new home.

Set Up Certain Protections

Now that you and your family and possessions have moved into your new home, one of your top priorities should be making sure that everyone and everything is properly protected.

As part of this, Elizabeth Weintraub, a contributor to The Balance, suggests that you look into getting a security system or other physical security fixtures to protect your family and all of your belongings within or around your home. Additionally, you should also go around the interior and exterior to protect your home from any pests that you don’t want to have to deal with in the future. Doing this now will make it much easier to prevent pests from getting in all areas of your home, including behind furniture or other pieces that you’ll soon be moving into their permanent positions in your new home.

Learn How The Home Works

Once you’ve gained access to your new home, you should try to get yourself familiar with how the home works as quickly as you can.

According to Andrew Zoellner, a contributor to the Family Handyman, some of the first things you should locate are the home’s main water shutoff valve and the electrical panel. In an emergency, you’re going to want to know how to quickly get to these areas. And by knowing where they are up front, you can also keep from blocking them while you’re unpacking your belongings into your new house.

Organize Things Correctly

Although it would be easier to just rip open the boxes you’ve packed and throw things wherever they need to go within your home, Diane Schmidt, a contributor to The Spruce, shares that taking the time to organize everything now will make your life a whole lot easier throughout the entire time that you’re living in this house.

To increase the chances of you wanting to take the time and use the effort to do this, make sure you have all of the organizational supplies that you will need to make this happen. Get organizers and boxes for your closets, pantry, cabinets, and more so that nothing will stand in your way of ensuring that your organization projects all get finished correctly the first time.

If you’re going to be moving into a new home soon, consider using the tips mentioned above to know what you should do as soon as you move in.

Make Your Garden Look Like a Million Dollar Oasis – Top 3 Tricks

January 19, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

If you step into most backyards across the world, you will see a garden. Some people love to plant veggies to save money on groceries, while others simply enjoy planting things they enjoy. While many gardens are functional and do their job, they don’t add a lot to the overall aesthetic of the yard in many cases.

They are often unkempt, not designed well and people don’t put a lot of time into making them look good. Thankfully, you aren’t doomed to have a garden that is an eyesore. This article is going to touch on a couple of different ways to make your garden look like a million dollar oasis.

Add Some Water

While you water your garden to keep the plants growing, why not add some water accents throughout the garden? Adding a birdbath, a fountain or a small waterfall somewhere in the garden can truly take it to the next level and separate it from your neighbors. If you want to take things a step further, you could add a pond to the garden.

This pond could be right in the middle of the garden, or off to the side as an accent. It could be large, small and even be home to some wildlife like fish, frogs or plants. While you might think adding a garden would be a ton of work, this isn’t actually the case. All it involves is digging a hole, lining it and filling it with water.

Of course, be sure to add the right decorative water features to the pond as well. If you feel it is a little over your head, there are certainly companies in your area that will be able to help you build the pond of your dreams.

Use Different Colors

A problem that many gardens have is that they look too basic. There is a lot of green, but many will lack other colors. If you want to truly make your garden look like a gorgeous oasis, you need to use different colors in the garden. The color can come from flowers and plants, but also other accessories in and around the garden.

Of course, while using a lot of color is great, try to make sure that things don’t clash. You want to use colors that work together and compliment each other well. If you need some assistance when it comes to deciding the right colors, it’s a good idea to use a color wheel.

Inject a Bit of Your Own Personality

The garden is in your yard, so don’t be afraid to make it your own. Adding your own personality can set your garden apart from the others, and make sure you enjoy looking at it and working at making it better. There are a number of different ways to do this. One of the best is to add some garden accessories and decor.

These can be bird baths, statues, pergolas, decorative stakes and sculptures. These can be purchased easily, or even DIYed if you so choose. Feel free to get as creative as you’d like and don’t shy away from something you like simply because it is unorthodox.

Whether you decide to add some water, use a variety of different colors and make it your own, these tips will be able to help improve the look of your garden.

6 Ways Your Business Premises Can Be Cleaned More Efficiently

January 7, 2021 by Tristan Leave a Comment

Every single commercial premise needs to be kept clean, whether it be a shop, restaurant, factory, warehouse or any other place of business. Efficient cleaning is about health and hygiene, appearances, organisation and more. Depending on the nature of the business, there will be different cleaning requirements. However, there are some ways to be more efficient with keeping your business clean that is relevant to most businesses, and we’ll take a look at some top tips in this article.

#1 – Floor Cleaning Made Easy With a Floor Cleaning Machine

With most commercial premises, the single largest area that requires regular cleaning is the floors. This being the case, you’ll want a fast and easier way of getting those floors cleaned to a quality standard and that can be achieved with a floor scrubber machine.

Depending on the size of the floor to be cleaned, you can either choose a walk-behind floor scrubber or a ride-on model for those really large floor spaces. Floor scrubbers generally sweep, scrub and dry all in one action, saving you time, money and leaving your floors sparkling clean.

You have the option of hiring a floor scrubber occasionally or, if you require the floors to be kept extremely clean on a regular basis, you could purchase your own floor scrubber.

#2 – Hire a Commercial Cleaning Company

Probably the easiest way to keep your business clean is to hire the services of professional cleaners to do it for you. If you have the budget for it, then cleaning will never be an issue and also won’t consume the valuable time of your employees.

You might need commercial cleaners to come in daily, or maybe just once a week, depending on the industry your business is in. Another advantage of hiring commercial cleaners is you don’t have to invest in loads of cleaning equipment, detergents and cleaning chemicals. You’ll also be assured of a quality job if you hire the right company, as commercial cleaners are experts when it comes to their trade.

#3 – Have the Garbage Taken Out Daily

Nothing looks worse than having rubbish lying about in the workplace, no matter what type of business you run. Cleanliness leads to a good impression when customers or other people visit, plus, having rubbish and debris scattered about can become a hazard that could lead to an accident.

Delegate the task of rubbish removal to one or two employees so that it becomes a habit of their daily work routine. This will help ensure that your business remains cleaner and rubbish-free each and every day.

#4 – Have Cleaning Products and Equipment On Hand

If cleaning your business premises is being tasked to staff members, it’ll make the job way easier if you have the necessary cleaning equipment and cleaning products on hand so your employees can get the cleaning done with speed and efficiency.

If your business has a staff kitchen or designated area where people eat their meals, make sure the right equipment and products are located in the kitchen to keep it in pristine condition. The same goes for business toilets or bathrooms. Mops, brooms, toilet brushes and other relevant gear should be readily on hand so staff can clean as they go.

#5 – Keep Clutter To a Minimum

Every business should strive to keep clutter to a minimum, whether your business is run in an office environment, food outlet, warehouse, factory or otherwise. Not only does a lot of clutter look messy, but it also makes the task of cleaning more difficult and a lot slower.

Another distinct advantage of keeping the clutter down is it makes it easier to work, to locate things and leads to a more streamlined and efficient workplace environment.

#6 – Place Signs Around the Workplace

Signs will act as a constant reminder for the staff to keep the place clean. A simple example is a sign in the kitchen that prompts staff to clean up after themselves when they’re finished eating. Sometimes all it takes is a reminder to get people to act and have cleanliness at the forefront of their minds.

The Wrap

Keeping your workplace clean is a positive thing and is made easier with a few simple tips. If everyone in the workplace chips in with a little effort, then cleaning really is a task made very simple.
