If you want to land a job at the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley, your first task is to learn how to speak their language. At places like San Francisco Bay University, you can learn the skills you need to land a job in the Fastest Growing Industries.

Here is a list of things you should do if you’re looking to get hired in the world of technology:

1. Be curious about how technology works

Natural curiosity is one of the most important skills to have if you want to work in technology. You should always be asking yourself, “how does that work?” And then try to answer that question for yourself.

2. Get experience working with modern technology

You’re going to need some practical experience before you can get hired at a company like Google or Facebook. So if you’re still in school, try finding a part-time job at a tech company. Even if it’s just an internship, these types of experiences will help you stand out when you’re applying for full-time jobs later on.

3. Get ready to code

If your dream is to work at Google or Facebook, you need to be ready for a coding challenge during the interview. You can practice on sites like LeetCode.

4. Get your LinkedIn profile in order

Technology companies use LinkedIn as a screening tool, so you should have an excellent profile before applying for jobs. Check out these tips on how to make your LinkedIn Profile stand out.

5. Start your technology project

You want to make sure you have something impressive in your portfolio when you start applying for jobs. What’s more impressive than starting your technology project?

6. Learn how to solve problems creatively

Large companies like Google and Facebook love hiring people who can think outside the box. If every candidate starts solving a problem the same way, they’re going to choose someone who can think differently. So make sure you practice these types of skills in your daily life.

7. Get your resume reviewed by experts

You can never be too paranoid when it comes to your resume getting read by recruiters and hiring managers at tech companies. If you want to make sure your resume is top-notch, you’re going to need some professional help. First, find a job coach who can review your resume and give you pointers.

8. Get interviewed by phone

Large technology companies like Facebook and Google will always conduct the first interview over the phone, so make sure you sound confident when answering questions about your background and skills. You can practice with friends or family members, or you can use a site like Interview Zen

9. Get interviewed in person

If you make it to the interview stage at these large technology companies, they will usually bring you on-site for an interview process that could last several days. Be prepared to work through some problem-solving challenges and answer some difficult questions.

10. Follow up with hiring managers

After you get hired, make sure to thank everyone who helped you land the job. If someone was especially helpful during the interview process, send them a handwritten note thanking them for their guidance and mentorship. Great leaders love receiving appreciation, so this will go a long way.
